All visitors must report to the office and collect a visitor’s pass before proceeding to classrooms. All enquiries concerning items for uniforms, admission, registration, transfers, lost property should be made at the office.
Parents are usually allowed to have consultation with teachers during the R.I. period, Thursdays from 2:20pm. In case of an emergency, a parent may visit otherwise, with the permission of the Principal or person in charge on the given day. Parents are also given the opportunity to consult with teachers during Parents’ Week which is scheduled every term.
Parents and visitors are required to follow a dress code when entering the compound:
No sleeveless tops
No netted garments
No bare chest
No bare midriff
No short/three-quarter pants
No slippers
On occasions, when pupils must bring money for trips, etc., all money must be brought in a sealed envelope with the following details written on the outside:
Child’s name
Child’s class
Purpose of the money eg. Title of trip
Amount enclosed
The envelope should be handed to the class teacher at the beginning of classes.
Each pupil must have a communication book. This is the medium for all communication between school and home. It is for notes, memoranda or notices from school to home and vice versa. Parents are also regularly notified about happenings at school and important dates on the school calendar via newsletters. Each term, a minimum of two (2) are circulated.
All pupils are given the opportunity to develop their innate talents and abilities. These opportunities come in the diverse activities they engage in. Parents are encouraged to allow their children to engage in a range of activities.
In May 2010 our Local School Board was introduced. This body supports the school through collaboration with our stake holders and Ministry of Education, and with fund raising for specific school development projects.
The Parent Plus is the organization that represents the parents attending San Fernando Girls’ Government School. It is organized in committees. The management committee oversees the affairs of the organization.
Girls from each class are chosen to be prefects for a period. The prefects discuss issues affecting pupils and suggest ways in which school life can be improved. Prefects also assist with buddy reading to younger pupils in the classroom and in the library. All prefects vote to choose a Head Girl who represents the other prefects at meetings with the Principal and the Local School Board.
Promotion from one level to the other follows the Education Ministry’s policy of promotion by attainment. A pupil is required to score 60% or more in the core subjects of Mathematics, Grammar, Comprehension and Vocabulary. Parents are encouraged to monitor their child’s progress and provide every support for her to perform well.
Pupils are encouraged to be responsible for their behaviour and their academic performance. They are rewarded for their efforts through the allocation of points under a house system. Merit buttons are awards for a range of behaviour including academic performance, discipline and effort.
